World Mission University

World Mission University’s Climate Ministry Challenge will help students, alumni, pastors, and church leaders connect climate science with theological reflection and practical service to their communities. Based in Los Angeles, CA, the project will address extreme heat, wildfire smoke, air quality, and related environmental health concerns, with particular attention to vulnerable populations and immigrant communities.
The initiative will begin with a hybrid seminar combining scientific instruction, reflection on creation care and love of neighbor, and a guided workshop on designing local ministry responses. Participants will explore how reliable climate information can inform Christian education, pastoral care, and congregational action.
Following the seminar, five teams will receive microgrants of up to $1,200 each to carry out projects over approximately six months. Potential activities include church heat-response plans, wildfire-smoke communication guides, climate-science lessons for youth, and outreach to older adults during extreme heat. Teams will document their progress and receive scientific and ministry-related feedback.
The project will conclude with a hybrid showcase and a Korean-English digital toolkit featuring accessible science summaries, theological reflection questions, practical checklists, planning templates, and project examples. By sharing these resources through WMU’s educational and church networks, the initiative aims to strengthen informed religious leadership and provide a repeatable approach to community resilience.
