The Huffington Ecumenical Institute (HEI) at Hellenic College Holy Cross is initiating an innovative educational program that strengthens engagement between Orthodox theology and climate science while preparing future clergy and religious leaders to address climate-related challenges in their communities.

Building on this foundation, the project addresses an important gap in theological education. While Orthodox institutions increasingly engage ecological theology—HEI established the first environmental course at an Orthodox theological school two years ago—seminarians and clergy often have limited opportunities to engage directly with contemporary climate science. The COVID-19 pandemic further demonstrated the need for religious leaders who can navigate scientific, ethical, theological, and pastoral questions with confidence and discernment.

This initiative will equip seminarians, students, clergy, and church leaders with the knowledge and resources to integrate climate science into pastoral ministry while remaining firmly grounded in Orthodox theology. By bringing theological reflection, scientific understanding, pastoral sensitivity, and practical action into conversation, the project will prepare future leaders to respond thoughtfully and effectively to climate-related challenges affecting the well-being of their communities.
